Tiny houses and small space design are slowly but surely becoming a big thing in North America, but we're seeing that it's catching on in Australia and New Zealand too, for many of the same reasons: rising real estate prices and the freedom of living better with less. Operating out of their own off-grid workshop that's powered by renewable energy, this gorgeous, award-winning tiny house was designed and built by husband-and-wife team Barlo and Shona of Sowelo Tiny Housesand offers a modern interior that's full of clever features.

Measuring square feet, the Sowelo has been built as a practical response to a lack of affordable housing:. There's a lot to like about this attractive little home: the minimalist, black, white and wooden interior has been laid out with a large patio door side entry.

Coming in, one enters the main sitting area, which can fit a large sectional that can be converted into a double bed and includes hidden storage. It overlaps the eating area, which is defined by a bar table that conveniently folds up from the kitchen counter. The kitchen itself has a large sink with an integrated drying rack, four-burner stove and oven and lots of counter space and storage.

All cabinets are done with an FSC-certified film faced birch plywood, and are opened with a push, rather than a drawer pull. There's a nice big window here that can open up the kitchen to the outside, cleverly connecting it to an outdoor patio so that one can easily converse with guests while cooking. The other end has a nook that can either become a workspace or a place for some quiet reading, thanks to the convenient, adjustable-height surface here.

The sliding pocket door opens up to a lovely bathroom, which holds the toilet, shower-bath, storage and the washing machine a better place to put it than in the kitchen, as some readers have pointed out. The storage stairs are nicely done with a minimalist metal handrail going up to one sleeping loft, and a wooden ladder forking up to another sleeping loft on the other side. Just as the interior of the recycled polyester-insulated home uses FSC-certified wood products and low-VOC adhesives and low- or no-VOC paints and coatings, similarly the exterior is constructed along the same lines.

The FSC-certified plywood cladding -- which has been tested and used in Australia for many years to be durable from to 40 degrees Celsius -- has been coated with a plant-based oil that retains the natural beauty of the wood. Another great option for this home is the exterior grow wall system, which has a system of removable, individual pots and an integrated watering system.

Bill Database. Bill Importing. Compliance Management. Contract Management. Emissions Monitoring. Energy Price Analysis. When energy use is deliberately monitored, controlled, and conserved, decreases in utility consumption and overall costs can be realized without sacrificing facilities operations. Such energy management techniques can take on many shapes and sizes. Following are strategies facility management executives can use to increase efficiency while overcoming potential costly challenges.

Actively manage real-time energy use. Proactive, real-time data management can expose a wide range of unknown challenges associated with occupancy, building use, and peaks in utility usage. For example, my firm, Southland Energy, installed a comprehensive metering system for a data center customer, monitoring everything from air and water flows, to very specific details of the data center.

The real-time data allowed the building operators to identify potential issues instantaneously, implement corrective actions to prevent critical shutdowns, and manage loads before they affected the entire system.

Actively manage what is measureable. Use advanced metering and energy management systems EMS to capture real-time data, ensure its accuracy and, in turn, address specific issues. For example, a K school installed an energy dashboard that managed the overall facility while actively engaging faculty and students. The customer could view how the systems were operating and how much they were saving based on their actions and system improvements.

In instances where building owners have utility monitoring equipment but no collection or processing software, the meters or monitoring equipment become stranded assets.

This is because millions of data points have to be gathered and processed manually, multiple times during the year. A sophisticated metering system equipped with the proper EMS software will automatically collect, process, and format these data points in real time, if not hourly. The ability to process these useful data points into an easy to use format improves the overall system effectiveness and functionality.

Actively manage energy consumption. Use collected data to build a strategy that manages costs and consumption on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis. Southland Energy worked with an industrial customer to evaluate multiple peak demand reduction strategies. Load shifting and demand limiting systems were implemented to limit customer loads during peak hours and reduce costs.

Limiting peak demand consumption offers additional benefits that are not always easy to identify or claim. The science of stamina has advanced to the point where individuals, teams, and whole organizations can, with some straightforward interventions, significantly increase their capacity to get things done.

As the demands of the workplace keep rising, many people respond by putting in ever longer hours, which inevitably leads to burnout that costs both the organization and the employee.

Meanwhile, people take for granted what fuels their capacity to work—their energy. Increasing that capacity is the best way to get more done faster and better. Time is a finite resource, but energy is different. It has four wellsprings—the body, emotions, mind, and spirit—and in each, it can be systematically expanded and renewed.

In this article, Schwartz, founder of the Energy Project, describes how to establish rituals that will build energy in the four key dimensions. Rejecting the role of a victim and instead viewing events through three hopeful lenses defuses energy-draining negative emotions. Avoiding the constant distractions that technology has introduced increases mental energy. And participating in activities that give you a sense of meaning and purpose boosts the energy of the spirit.

The new workday rituals succeed only if leaders support their adoption, but when that happens, the results can be powerful. A group of Wachovia Bank employees who went through an energy management program outperformed a control group on important financial metrics like loans generated, and they reported substantially improved customer relationships, productivity, and personal satisfaction.

When we met him a year ago, he was working to hour days, felt perpetually exhausted, and found it difficult to fully engage with his family in the evenings, which left him feeling guilty and dissatisfied. He slept poorly, made no time to exercise, and seldom ate healthy meals, instead grabbing a bite to eat on the run or while working at his desk. Most of us respond to rising demands in the workplace by putting in longer hours, which inevitably take a toll on us physically, mentally, and emotionally.

That leads to declining levels of engagement, increasing levels of distraction, high turnover rates, and soaring medical costs among employees. We at the Energy Project have worked with thousands of leaders and managers in the course of doing consulting and coaching at large organizations during the past five years. The core problem with working longer hours is that time is a finite resource. Energy is a different story. Defined in physics as the capacity to work, energy comes from four main wellsprings in human beings: the body, emotions, mind, and spirit.

In each, energy can be systematically expanded and regularly renewed by establishing specific rituals—behaviors that are intentionally practiced and precisely scheduled, with the goal of making them unconscious and automatic as quickly as possible.

10 Strategies For Energy Management

To effectively reenergize their workforces, organizations need to shift their emphasis from getting more out of people to investing more in them, so they are motivated—and able—to bring more of themselves to work every day. The rituals and behaviors Wanner established to better manage his energy transformed his life.Skip to Main Content.

Real-Time Energy Management Optimization for Smart Household Abstract: The ubiquitous perception and interactive properties offered by Internet of Things IoT technology enable more active participation of residential users to achieve energy efficiency via various demand response DR strategies.

In this paper, the energy management problem of a smart home consisting of renewable energy source RESenergy storage system ESSa set of schedulable home appliances, and dynamic electricity tariff is formulated.

A home energy management system HEMS is developed using the mixed integer linear programing MILP technique, aiming to solve both load scheduling problem of home appliances and the energy dispatch problem of utility grid under a single optimization framework in real-time. By leveraging the peak shaving and energy storage capability of ESS, the proposed HEMS is able to minimize the energy cost required to satisfy the scheduled load demands without violating the operating constraints of smart home and the convenience level of users.

Article :. DOI: Need Help?Because of growing pressure, both nationally and internationally, on businesses to become more sustainable, energy management is more important than ever. Agreements like COP21 the Paris Agreement and the Climate Coalition are helping to bring down emissions while forcing businesses to rethink their energy usage. Energy sustainability reporting is no longer voluntary, either. By law, over 60, buildings with a combined 4. Both employees and investors are demanding more transparency into energy data and sustainability practices.

In fact, many institutional investors will not commit money to real estate owners that are not participating in voluntary GRESB reporting.
